South West Sports Centre is a busy Aquatic Centre servicing the Bunbury Community. The indoor 25m and Leisure Pool is an ageing asset that required a staged refurbishment works to ensure the community could can continue enjoying the facility for years to come.
The project required careful planning to minimise impact of the shut down. Recognising the importance of the shut down time frame working 24 hour shifts, with major demolition works carried out at night to avoid impacting on the main centre which remained open throughout the project.
The renovation works included:
- Removal of the existing pool liner.
- Investigative works of the condition of the existing pool shell structure.
- Investigative works of the existing and remaining pool tiles.
- Investigative works of water seepage from existing concrete lazy river structure.
- Structural repairs to the main pool shell, including rust repairs and replacement of render to the main pool shell.
- Removal of existing floor tiles to investigate damage.
- Non-structural repairs to tiles, grout and expansion joints.
- Demolition and the removal of existing water features, capping and termination of pipe works and tile patching.
- Demolition and preparation works to the lazy river structure to allow ELBE reinforced PVC liner to be installed as a secondary safe guard to protect the structural integrity of the river structure.
- Installation of ELBE Reinforced PVC liner to the lazy river.
- Installation of poly fleece underlay to the 25m Pool.
- Installation of ELBE Reinforced PVC Liner to the 25m leisure pool.
Upon draining the pool and conducting a thorough inspection of the structure there were a number of areas that required additional repair works. Although the scope of works was increased APS completed the entire project on time and within the original project budget.
