Craigie Leisure Centre Pool Refurbishment

LocationCraigie, WA
ClientCity of Joondalup
Project CostUnder $1 Million

Craigie Leisure Centre is one of the busiest aquatic facilities in Western Australia, therefore undertaking a major refurbishment of the indoor Leisure Pool required an experienced contractor to manage and carefully plan the works to minimize the impact to the Facility Operators and the Community. The tiling to the Leisure Pool floor was failing and required replacing.  Recognizing the importance of a tight timeline, APS planned the project schedule to operate on 24 hour shifts, 7 days a week.

As with any major renovation project, issues can arise.  Through Risk Management Planning, APS identified potential issues in advance and ensured there were contingency plans in place. Upon draining the Swimming Pool, the wall tiles were found to be defective and required replacing along with the floor tiles.  Fortunately, APS, through careful Risk Management Planning, had identified this as a potential problem and the contingency plan was actuated.   Previously sourced and secured, all the materials and labour to complete the additional works were ready so there were no significant delay’s caused by the increased scope.

Works for this project included;

  • Stripping and removing the existing floor tiles.
  • Stripping and removing the wall tiles.
  • High water blasting to the pool shell to prepare for new tiling.
  • Hold points for inspection of the concrete substrate.
  • Concrete patch repairs.
  • Waterproofing to the entire swimming pool.
  • Installing new Metz Tile system to swimming pool with 10 Year Warranty.
  • Installing new expansions joints.
  • Waterproofing to the wet deck gutter.
  • Protecting and preserving pool furniture and assets during the works.

The project was successfully completed and although the scope of works increased by 100%, the impact was minimised through diligent planning in the early stage of the Project.
